In 1979 after some arduous wandering with his young family, Louis Bock has stumbled upon an abandoned vineyard in Redwood Valley 10 Miles north of Ukiah in Mendocino County. Formerly a vineyard of Chaslis and Palomino grapes for the production of sherry this land had transformed into a meadow of young oaks, Manzanita, wild grasses and was beyond saving. After much deliberation and lobbying from Master Vine Grower Mark Turula, the vineyard was replanted with Sauvignon Blanc and later Sangiovese and Viognier were added.
When it came time to come up with a label for the fruits of his labour, Louis figured that the creek which had no name, coupled with some ideas provided him with a name too perfect to pass up. And so it was that Chance Creek was born.
