Kokomo Winery

Kokomo Winery is perched on the East side of Dry Creek Valley amidst the 120 acres of prime benchland vineyards of Timber Crest Farms.  Owner and Winemaker, Erik Miller, started the winery in 2004 naming it after his hometown of Kokomo, Indiana, and decided on a Coastal Cypress Tree as a logo to signify his move out west.

Kokomo currently produces over a dozen different varietals and several single vineyard designates which are farmed by his partner in the winery, Randy Peters.

Kokomo Winery focuses their terroir-driven wines on the three distinctive appellations of Sonoma County – Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. This dynamic partnership of a grower and a winemaker ensures the winery’s ongoing commitment to quality and consistency for future vintages.

Kokomo Winery has been making its mark in Sonoma County, unfailingly earning 90+ ratings, Best of Class, and Gold Medals across all of their varietals since the beginning. The small production techniques and relationships with growers in Dry Creek Valley and Sonoma County allow Kokomo to make wines that are as individual and unique as the vineyards from which they were born.

Kokomo Sauvignon Blanc

*2020 Vintage Description*

The estate 120-acre Timber Crest Vineyard is located off Dry Creek Road.  The Sauvignon Blanc vineyard actually borders Dry Creek itself, directly across from the winery.  The soil composition of this vineyard is Yolo Sandy Loam and the clone is Musqué.  Canopy management included an extensive amount of leaf pull at the basal leaf zone to filter in plenty of sunlight to the cluster.

Picking the Sauvignon Blanc at different ripeness levels gives this wine versatility and complexity. With natural acidity and citrus elements bestowed by the earlier pick, and juicy, tropical flavors as a result of the later pick, this Sauvignon Blanc is a layered and complex wine.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc
Appellation: Dry Creek Valley
Alcohol: 12.6%
Fermentation: 100% Barrel fermented, 10% New French Oak, 5% New Acacia

Kokomo Muscat Blanc

*2020 Vintage Description*

This 120 acre Timber Crest Vineyard is located off Dry Creek Road on the valley floor.  The soil composition of this vineyard is Yolo Sandy Loam.  There is ¾ of an acre planted next to the Sauvignon Blanc here at Timber Crest Vineyard that Randy Peters planted in 2008.

The goal with this Muscat Blanc was to make a dry style that would be similar to the beautiful Alsace wines that pair with spicy ethnic foods. With an emphasis on floral notes and bright acidity, this is a fun and playful wine that still has beautiful depth and a surprisingly full body.

The aromatics of this wine are unmistakable and transport you to sitting in a field of spring flowers!  The floral notes of lemon blossom and honeysuckle are integrated with notes of pineapple, Asian pear, and lemon verbena. These follow through to the palate where flavors of pineapple and just ripe nectarine are balanced by crisply bright acidity. This refreshingly dry wine is perfect for sipping on the patio on a summer day and for pairing with spicier Thai or Indian cuisines.

With consistent fog and extended hang time, this fruit is fully developed and loaded with complexity. This former Gravenstein Apple orchard was replanted in the early 80’s by Randy Peters, who only had access to two clones at that time, Pommard and Waldenswil (2A).

This block of Peters Vineyard gets its name from the varmints that try to make it their home. Dense and opulent, showing the more masculine side of the varietal, this Pinot displays earth and plum notes aromatically. *2019 Vintage Description*

This Dry Creek Zinfandel is comprised of fruit from two different vineyards: Mizany Vineyard and Pauline’s Vineyard. Although both are located in Dry Creek Valley, the different vineyards bring two unique wines with their own distinct personalities. Mizany Vineyard is planted to the DuPratt clone of Zinfandel, which has a spicier character with a darker fruit profile.  It is a field blend comprised of Zinfandel with a 5 % blend of Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, and Petite Sirah, much like the first vineyards planted in Dry Creek Valley. Pauline’s Vineyard is planted to the old mother-clone of Dry Creek. This vineyard is on the valley floor in the famous Cortina gravelly loam.

The 2019 Zinfandel is classy and elegant, displaying a ravishing garnet color and showing the bright acidity and fruit of black cherry and smoky plum. Rustic yet plush, aromas of cherry, anise, and underbrush give way to focused flavors of red plum, smoky herb, and pepper.

Much of the fruit for this Cuvee comes from Tollini Vineyard, which is owned and farmed by third generation farmer Alvin Tollini. The vineyard is located in Redwood Valley AVA of Mendocino, and is 100% dry-farmed. The Syrah grapes come from a vineyard that is located in the cool-climate Sonoma Coast appellation, which provides a richness on the palate and a distinctive white pepper character that the varietal (at its best) is known for.

This Cuvée is a focused blend that is inspired by the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2019 blend is comprised of Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel, Carignan, and Petite Sirah. This wine is very complex because of the nature of the blend. The deep ruby color is backed up by essence of blueberry, black cherry, lavender, with cracked pepper and earthy notes.  It has a medium body and soft tannins that lead to a long lingering finish.

Kokomo Sparkling Wine

*2016 Vintage Description*

Peters Vineyard is ideal to make sparkling wine from because of its proximity to the coast. The extreme cool climate of Sonoma Coast brings the acidity front and center in the grape. The Chardonnay had a larger than normal crop, so it was thinned more aggressively than usual, and the flavors were robust.  This being the 4th vintage for sparkling, they decided to pick at 19 brix to showcase the acidity.

  • Whole-cluster pressed for delicacy
  • Fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperatures of 55° to 60°F to retain vibrancy and freshness
  • This Chardonnay base wine was all clone 4 on St. George rootstock
  • Aging on the yeast for 2 years

Straw yellow in color with an aromatic bouquet of blood oranges, green apples, and toasty brioche. On the palate, this wine is refreshing and light with an elegant dry finish and bright citrus flavors.

Kokomo Pinot Noir, Reserve

*2018 Vintage Description*

Located in West Sonoma County, 8 miles from the coast as the crow flies, this is the perfect location for Pinot Noir. This vineyard’s soil composition is a rich Goldridge Sandy Loam. With consistent foggy conditions which extend hang time, the fruit is fully developed and loaded with complexity. This former Gravenstein apple orchard was replanted in the early 1980’s by Randy Peters, who paired the right clone with the right vineyard site. Peters Vineyard is planted to 5 different Pinot Noir clones, two of which are heritage clones (planted in the early 1980’s): Pommard and Wädenswil. While other wines may be blended with other varietals to provide depth and character, it is notable that the delicate nature of Pinot Noir only allows for blending clonally.

This is a barrel selection from the favorite barrels of the 2018 vintage of Peters Vineyard Pinot Noir. This opulent Pinot Noir is deep garnet in color and boasts aromas of plum, clove, and nutmeg with subtle nuances of black tea. Light bodied, with a satiny mouthfeel and delicate tannins, flavors of red plum, raspberry and Bing cherry are offset by hints of cinnamon. A long finish of plum and red fruit lingers pleasantly on the palate.
