DescriptionLucien et Andre Brunel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux, Rhone, France 2009
WINE ADVOCATEThe 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blockbuster. Deep ruby-colored and a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the rest other permitted varieties, it offers up a big, sweet bouquet of kirsch, blackberries, ground herbs, pepper and licorice. Full-bodied, textured and layered, it has terrific fruit intensity, no hard edges and a great finish. Drink this hedonistic beauty anytime over the coming decade or more.
VINOUSOpaque ruby. Dark berries, violet and a whiff of fresh peppercorn on the nose, complicated by mineral and licorice notes. Sweet, creamy dark fruit is given definition and lift by firm acidity. Suave, fine-grained, and round, showing the ripe side of the vintage but in no way blowsy. Finishes with powerful spice notes and admirable persistence.
