DescriptionThere has been a progressive trend by Kistler’s winemaking team and owners to harvest at slightly lower sugars, back off slightly on the percentage of new oak used, and bottle their wines earlier. All of this is designed to preserve as much fruit and freshness in the wines as possible. This winery has long featured some of the finest terroirs on the Sonoma Coast and Russian River for Chardonnays, and their approach has clearly been very Burgundian, with full malolactic fermentation, no acid adjustments and letting the vineyard and clonal material push its personality to the forefront. Perhaps the biggest change of all has been the shift to 100% indigenous yeast fermentations for all the wines.
Vinous (Antonio Galloni)Kistler's 2012 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is gorgeous. It brings together all of the rich, textured signatures of this site, all supported by vibrant acidity. Hints of almond, hazelnut and lemon add nuance on the close. The 2012 possesses lovely body and depth, but at the same time it is also beautifully perfumed. The finish alone is striking.
Robert ParkerHazelnuts, marzipan and bread dough notes along with some honeyed apricot and orange zest are present in the medium to full-bodied, fresh, crisp, yet intense 2012 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch.
Wine Spectator (James Laube)Beautifully crafted, sleek and refined, with a bright, zingy mix of vibrant white peach, nectarine, tangerine and green apple flavors, finishing with a long, lively, juicy aftertaste that reverberates with lemon blossom accents.
