2017 Chateau de la Maltroye Les Grandes Ruchottes, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, FranceWS (92-94) | WINE SPECTATORBright, light yellow. High-pitched scents of spices and menthol. At once powerful and elegant, with its sappy citrus flavors currently playing second fiddle to terroir-driven crushed-rock minerality. Wonderfully dense and broad, yet the overall impression is one of weightlessness, no doubt owing in part to the relatively low potential alcohol here (12.5%, chaptalized to about 13.3%). This superb expression of soil finishes with outstanding rising length. |
BH 91 | BURGHOUNDThis too is quite pungent with its smoky nose of matchstick and sulfur that largely blocks out the underlying fruit. By contrast there is both lovely freshness and vibrancy to the solidly rich and voluminous medium-bodied flavors that also exude evident minerality on the wonderfully complex and lengthy finish. Assuming that the nose cleans up with a few years of bottle age, this could be first-rate. |
