Heat stress refers to the conditions that bottled wine can endure post-production, significantly affecting its quality and longevity. After bottling, wine is sensitive to temperature fluctuations that can occur in various environments, such as kitchens or vehicles. For instance, when bottles are stored in a kitchen, the heat generated during cooking, combined with temperature changes while sleeping, can subject the wine to harmful conditions that compromise its integrity.
Additionally, leaving wine in a hot car during summer shopping trips can lead to heat stress. The elevated temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly rise, impacting the wine’s flavor and aroma. Once home, if the wine is then transferred to a wine fridge, it may not recover from the adverse effects of the heat endured while in the car.
Transportation is another critical factor where heat stress can occur. Wines shipped in containers across equatorial regions often lack temperature control, exposing them to extreme heat during transit. This lack of regulation can lead to significant quality degradation.
Moreover, some warehouses do not have temperature control systems, allowing summer heat to spike to levels as high as 45 degrees Celsius. Such conditions can virtually “kill” the wine, leading to flat flavors and loss of complexity.
