1998 MOUTON ROTHSCHILD MAGNUM
$975/bottle
96 points, Robert Parker
Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.
2013 TOYMAKER CABERNET SAUVIGNON
$325/bottle
95 points, Robert Parker
The Toymaker 2013 Proprietary Red is rich, tannic and backward with super-intensity, loads of espresso bean mixed with chocolate, blackcurrant, new oak and spice. Forget it for 3-4 years and drink it over the following 20-25.
2002 PICHON-LONGUEVILLE BARON MAGNUM
$375/bottle
89 points, Robert Parker
This is an elegant, deep ruby-colored wine with notes of sweet cassis, cedar wood, and tobacco with a hint of chocolate in the background. It is a layered, moderately weighty wine with pretty, even understated fruit flavors, excellent concentration, and a long finish with relatively ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016.
2013 BALLOT-MILLOT CHARMES MAGNUM
$190/bottle
90 points, Wine Advocate
Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes has quite an opulent bouquet, very “Charmes” in style you could say, with ample white peach, apricot and nectarine scents on the nose. Quite lavish but not over the top. The palate is well balanced with orange zest and mandarin on the entry, not quite as complex as I anticipated after the aromatics though there is fine delineation on the finish.
2012 TOYMAKER CABERNET SAUVIGNON
$325/bottle
On the nose, the 2012 ToyMaker has hints of warm cherry tart, ripe fig, baking spice, and fresh lavender. The palette is rich with sweet tannins, luscious red and black fruits, cream de cassis, and candied almonds. The moderate alcohol levels and slightly higher acidity lend a delightfully charming character of bright finesse, mouth-watering fruit, and a finish of on-going layers and length.
2014 LAFON CLOS DE LA BARONNE
$132/bottle
This notable Meursault estate was founded in the late 1800’s and is today managed by the charismatic Dominique Lafon. Dominique is very highly regarded for his fanatical grape selection and biodynamic agriculture, for the way he coaxes the most beautiful expressions of terroir out of each respective site.
2010 PRIDE MOUNTAIN CABERNET
$80/bottle
89 points, Robert Parker
The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot) comes from a much stronger vintage than 2011. It exhibits deep, charcoal-infused, creme de cassis, blackberry, licorice and subtle smoke notes in addition to admirable texture and a soft, consumer-friendly style. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
